If you have not used pastels much before,  I would advise starting with a Pastels Techniques Foundation Day. There are some new courses this year, ones to choose from are;

A course focusing on different pastel techniques. Rebecca demonstrates with reference to other artists’ work and students  explore and experiment with different ways to use this versatile medium. Excellent for beginners to pastels, or for artists used to working in other media.

This is a great course to start looking at using pastels for landscape painting, and how to capture light and atmosphere. It includes advice about colour mixing with pastels.

A chance to look more closely at trees, rocks, water, and other natural forms and features of the landscapes.

NEW – LANDSCAPES IN PASTEL 3,Water, from the Stream to the Sea
How to paint and capture the feeling of water with pastels, from still ponds to fast streams, and of course the sea.

NEW – LANDSCAPES IN PASTEL 4, Trees, near and far, as seasons change, and plants
A day to concentrate on trees, a huge and fascinating subject. Looking at ways to draw and paint them singly or in woods and forests, from close up or in the distance.

Pastels and inks are great for capturing architecture and interiors. Simple techniques to draw perspectives and atmosphere. Not suitable for beginners to drawing.

PORTRAITS IN PASTEL 1, Structure and features with a model for part of the day
An introduction to capturing the character, individuality, and structure of portraits in the morning, looking at the head from different angles, and how to draw features.  Includes demonstrations and examples from Rebecca’s and other artists work.

PORTRAITS IN PASTEL 2, Skin tones and how to use colour
Looking at the different ways we can use and mix colours to render the subtle changes in hues of skin tones and hair. From gentle tones to being more creative and vibrant, and how we can create mood and atmosphere.  Includes demonstrations and examples from Rebecca’s and other artists work. There is no model on this day.

NEW – PORTRAITS IN PASTEL 3, Atmosphere and textures.
What does it FEEL like, and how can we convey that with soft pastels? Using these techniques to create mood, character and atmosphere. Includes a model in the afternoon.

FIGURES  IN PASTEL, Capturing energy and movement
I have introduced this course after having so much interest in the life and energy of my paintings. Looking at proportions and body language, taking or choosing the best photographic reference,  telling a story and putting the figure in context.

Looking at animals,understanding the importance of the simple structure of creatures, and learning techniques to capture fur, feathers or scales. Let me know if you are particularly interested in horses.

This course is in response to the many requests by people who have been on many of my courses, and want to keep learning how to develop their work and their own style, but looking at subject matter of their own choice.  Let me know a few days before what you will be concentrating on and I will plan accordingly. It could also be a good chance to experiment with pastel primers or mixed media. I will demonstrate and show examples where appropriate.
